Carved Horizon: Carvoeiro

Project type

Conceptual Residential Architecture & Interior Design

Date

October 2023

Location

Carvoeiro, Algarve, Portugal

For this boutique hotel project located in the stunning coastal town of Carvoeiro, Portugal, my design vision was to sculpt architecture that felt born directly from the landscape. Drawing inspiration from the region's iconic limestone cliffs and hidden grottoes, I adopted a "troglodyte" or cave-like aesthetic. The suites are not built on the land but seem carved out of it, featuring organic, undulating walls and ceilings finished in raw, textured earth tones that blur the boundaries between interior shelter and geological formation.

Sustainability was inherent in this approach, utilizing the immense thermal mass of the surrounding earth to naturally regulate interior temperatures, significantly reducing energy demands. The biophilic design principles are aggressive and experiential; massive, frameless apertures are cut into the organic forms to curate uninterrupted views of the Atlantic Ocean and the surrounding lush hillsides. By integrating hanging plants and utilizing natural materials like woven fibers and raw stone, the boundary between the untamed Algarvian nature and the luxury interior is dissolved.

The intended impact on the guest is a profound sense of grounding and seclusion. I wanted to create a cocooning effect where the noise of the modern world is muffled by the weight of the earth, replaced by the primal sounds of the sea and the wind. Whether soaking in a tub sculpted from the floor itself or relaxing by an integrated fireplace, the user experience is one of elemental luxury, offering a serene, meditative retreat that honors the ancient spirit of the coast.
