Casa de la Roca

Project type

High Luxury Residence

Date

January 2026

Location

Cuyagua, Venezuela

The Vision I envisioned Casa de la Roca not as a structure built on the landscape, but one that emerges organically from it. Situated on a dramatic coastal precipice, the design utilizes a tiered architectural approach, where flat, cantilevered rooflines step down the cliff face to mimic the natural topography. By wrapping the exterior in rough-hewn local stone, I ensured the residence visually anchors itself into the mountain, creating a heavy, protective shell that contrasts beautifully with the lightness of the expansive glass facades facing the ocean.

Sustainability & Biophilia Sustainability was the guiding principle behind every material choice and orientation decision. I prioritized the use of excavated stone and thermal-mass concrete floors to naturally regulate the home's temperature, absorbing the day's heat and releasing it during cooler evenings. To foster a deep biophilic connection, I designed the interiors—from the walnut-clad kitchen to the glass-enclosed master bath—to dissolve the boundary between inside and out. Expansive sliding doors facilitate passive cooling through coastal cross-breezes, while native xeriscaping integrates the pool deck seamlessly with the arid local flora.

The Impact The experience of inhabiting Casa de la Roca is one of profound elemental connection. Whether lounging in the sunken conversation pit or swimming in the infinity pool that visual merges with the horizon, the resident is constantly suspended between the rugged earth and the open sea. My goal was to create a sanctuary of "prospect and refuge"—a space that feels robust and sheltering against the wild environment, yet open enough to allow the soul to breathe with the rhythm of the tides.
