Cortes do Meio Residence
Project type
Conceptual Luxury Residential / Biophilic Architecture
Date
2024
Location
Cortes do Meio, Serra da Estrela, Portugal
Project Overview
This conceptual residence is grounded in biophilic immersion and organic integration, drawing from a material palette of concrete and timber to create spaces that resonate with the surrounding terrain. Rather than imposing upon the landscape, the architecture frames and elevates it: expansive openings capture sweeping views of the Serra da Estrela, while deep overhangs and vertical timber elements articulate light and shade within the interiors.
Relationship with Nature
Seamless Transitions: Floor-to-ceiling glass and open-air atriums blur interior and exterior, allowing natural light and airflow to permeate living spaces.
Ecosystem Integration: Vertical greenery and cascading plant life soften hard surfaces, fostering a sensory connection with local flora.
Water as Experience: Integrated channels and sheltered courtyards reference natural watercourses, contributing to passive cooling and creating tranquil spatial moments.
Sustainability & Performance
The residence harnesses passive design to achieve comfort and environmental responsiveness. Thermal mass from concrete walls mitigates temperature extremes, while strategically designed shading reduces solar gain and artificial lighting demand.
AI-Enhanced Design Process
Advanced AI tools were used as co-creative instruments in the early conceptual phase — enabling rapid exploration of lighting, material interactions, and spatial atmosphere before formal drafting. This iterative process informed decisions around orientation, material balance, and the experiential qualities of key spaces.
Design Philosophy & Methodology
1. Biophilic Immersion: Living with Nature
The core ethos of this project is Biophilic Design. Rather than treating nature as a backdrop, the architecture weaves the ecosystem into the home’s DNA.
Vertical Gardens & Atriums: Interior volumes are punctured by light wells and open-air atriums (as seen in the master suite), allowing cascading greenery to soften the raw concrete walls.
Water as an Element: The spa sanctuary features integrated water channels that mimic natural streams, creating passive cooling and a soothing auditory landscape that enhances the sensory experience.
Habitat Integration: The layout was designed to respect local biodiversity, creating a "soft edge" where the home ends and the mountain habitat begins.
2. Sustainable Luxury
Sustainability here is not an afterthought; it is the definition of the luxury provided.
Passive Climate Control: The use of high-thermal-mass concrete walls regulates indoor temperatures, keeping the home cool during the day and warm at night.
Natural Light Optimization: Deep overhangs and slatted wood ceilings filter sunlight, reducing solar heat gain while eliminating the need for artificial lighting during the day.
Materiality: We utilized locally sourced timber and eco-friendly concrete composites to minimize the carbon footprint while achieving a high-end, tactile finish.
3. The AI Advantage
Carvoeiro 2023 was conceptualized using advanced Artificial Intelligence tools as a creative co-pilot.
Iterative Visualization: AI allowed for the rapid prototyping of complex lighting scenarios and material juxtapositions, ensuring the balance between the "cold" concrete and "warm" wood was perfect before a single sketch was finalized.
Environmental Modeling: AI algorithms helped simulate how light flows through the open-plan spaces at different times of the year, optimizing the orientation for mountain views.
Visual Walkthrough
The Horizon Lounge (Open Plan Living) The heart of the home is a seamless indoor-outdoor pavilion. Floor-to-ceiling glass walls retract completely, extending the living space onto the pool deck. The slatted timber ceiling draws the eye outward toward the mountain vistas, creating an infinite sense of space.
The Concrete Canopy (Master Suite) A study in contrast, the master suite combines the protective weight of concrete with the fragility of ferns and mosses. A central atrium brings the "jungle" inside, creating a sleeping experience that feels like resting on a forest floor, yet with the comfort of high-end design.
The Hydro-Sanctuary (Spa & Bath) More than a bathroom, this space is a wet-room retreat. Cascading water features and stepping stones replace traditional layouts, encouraging a slower, mindful pace of life. It is a space designed for silence, steam, and solitude.
