The Atlantic Villa
Project type
High-End Residential Villa
Date
2025
Location
Costa Vicentina
The Atlantic Villa was conceived as an ecological sanctuary designed to immerse its inhabitants in the surrounding coastal pine forest. The primary architectural directive was biophilic integration, ensuring that every space establishes a direct visual and physical connection with nature. The house is oriented to maximize views and natural light, with expansive floor-to-ceiling glazing that dissolves the boundary between the interior living spaces and the rugged landscape. The defining feature of the ground level is the transition from the shaded timber pergola terrace to a natural swimming pond, which uses aquatic plants and gravel for filtration instead of chemicals, creating a thriving ecosystem right at the villa's doorstep.
A rigorous commitment to sustainability and material honesty guided the construction. The material palette is a tactile blend of locally quarried stone, which anchors the structure to the earth, and sustainably harvested timber used for decking, pergolas, and cladding, which will weather naturally over time. The flat roof is utilized as a functional green roof and terrace, providing thermal insulation, managing rainwater runoff, and replacing the footprint of the house with native vegetation. Passive solar design strategies, such as deep overhangs and the planted pergolas, naturally regulate interior temperatures by shading the glass during the summer while allowing low winter sun to penetrate.
Stylistically, the project is a synthesis of contemporary minimalism and vernacular warmth. The clean, rectilinear form of the concrete and stucco volumes is softened by the organic textures of the stone and wood, creating an aesthetic that is both modern and deeply rooted in its context. The design eschews stark industrialism in favor of an "organic modern" approach, where the architecture serves as a quiet, resilient frame for the vibrant natural world outside. From the ground-floor pool deck to the panoramic rooftop lounge, the villa offers a multi-level experience of outdoor living dedicated to tranquility and environmental harmony.
