THE PIODÃO SANCTUARY A Biophilic Retreat in Serra do Açor

Project type

High-End Residential / Eco-Luxury Retreat

Date

June 2025

Location

Piodão, Serra do Açor, Portugal

Nestled within the historic schist mountains of Piódão, Portugal, this residence redefines luxury through radical biophilia. Rather than sitting on the land, the architecture is embedded within it—dissolving boundaries between shelter and the wild Serra do Açor landscape.

Design Philosophy
Inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright’s organic architecture, the design emphasizes horizontality, integration, and continuity with nature. Cantilevered concrete planes create deep overhangs for shade and frame expansive mountain views, grounding the building in its terrain.

Spatial Experience
Seamless indoor–outdoor transitions are achieved through large-scale glazing, open atriums, and integrated water features. These elements guide movement, regulate microclimate, and echo the region’s natural streams, allowing nature to flow through the home.

Materiality
Raw concrete and stone provide thermal mass and permanence, while vertical timber slats introduce warmth, tactility, and acoustic comfort—balancing Brutalist expression with human-scale softness.

Sustainability Strategy
Designed for a protected landscape, the project relies on passive systems: thermal mass, deep eaves, and optimized daylighting for year-round comfort. Rainwater harvesting feeds pools and water features, supporting lush indoor vegetation and evaporative cooling. Courtyards and vertical gardens function as green lungs, integrating local biodiversity into daily living.

Role of AI in Design
AI tools were used as a conceptual design instrument, enabling rapid exploration of spatial, material, and atmospheric qualities. This workflow helped visualize light, water, vegetation, and aging materials—bridging architectural theory with a lived, sensory experience.
